Kim-Kardashian.jpgThe model, actress and fashion designer Kim Kardashian caused a stir in chess circles yesterday when she tweeted, "I want to learn how to play chess. Wondering if Levon Aronian can teach me!"

The Armenian world #3 ranked player Lev Aronian is currently playing at the prestigious Tata Steel tournament in the Netherlands.  He re-tweeted Kim's plea but didn't respond.

Chess.com owner Erik Allebest was touched by Kim Kardashian's interest in the royal game and has offered to sponsor her chess tuition, recommending 21-year old US Grandmaster Sam Shankland as the ideal tutor!

So if you're reading this Kim, please tweet your interest to @chesscom and become part of the #1 online chess community!

hi Ms Kim. If you don't need the wobble chess board and set, can you give it to me? I can teach you chess in exchange.

there is no chess in her future. period.

it was a throwaway tweet ****that she paid someone to write**** designed to garner her some cred with her vapid, brainless fans. women in their first trimester are so hormoned out with baby fever that sitting down with a book and a board would be the absolute last thing on their mind.

i'd love to hear a female chess player's perspective on the 'issue.'

Chess is larger than the narrow minded moral view of RookedOnChess.  There is nothing wrong with making money, looking out for yourself, being popular and beautiful, or even being risque.  Everyone's hero is someone else's villian.  Some view the pope negatively too.  Regardless of how Kim irks your personal hangups, she is an unqualified success and can bring attention and possibly funds to the community.  Those of you who think the game is not right for certain kinds of people are being too judgemental.  Chess can benifit from a rich and diverse player background, not just people you think can be future masters.

Lesson #1 you are only trying to mate the black king when you are the white pieces! Otherwise you need to mate the White king.

The photo is of Kim Kardashian with the chess set is from 2010 at a party held at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC.  So it's nothing to do with her chess tweet, but it was a useful pic to illustrate the article! Smile

Isn't it just a photoshopped image ? Undecided

That's exactly the point---I'd be pretty willing to bet that's the reason this is even happening. A photo deliberately taken of her all dressed up with a champagne glass and chess board (which we all know isn't even set up correctly) is all about image. The game of chess has a classy, intelligent image of its own which it seems is the intent here---to try to "up" her image from the very low one she's got. Ugh. A woman who spends that much time in front of the mirror, picking out outfits and then strutting, won't put serious time into learning this game. Another thing I'd probably bet on.

I think GM Shankland should pursue this with at least vague interest. Imagine the renown he would win for himself and the game as a whole if he actually managed to make a credible player out of a famous person who knew absolutely nothing of the game when lessons began. Furthermore, if the famous person were one who was not considered by most to be a particularly intelligent individual, then the feat would be all the more spectacular.

The first five lessons could be devoted to how to set up the board correctly.
