phplO1rH0.jpegThe 2013 London Candidates competition will surely go down in chess history as one of the most exciting world championship qualifying events ever held.

After a few early glitches the official website worked well, and the video coverage and commentary was excellent.

Thanks to all the players, organisers, the venue and everyone involved in the event for putting on a great show!

The closing ceremony and prize-giving took place at 11 Downing Street, the official residence of Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer.

    @7Beaufeet7:

           I stand corrected! Thanks.

           BTW, who's this Fischer character? Carrie Fisher? Eddie Fisher? Fisher Price......?    Laughing

    @7Beaufeet7:

           Would you get over the clothes thing already? It's not like they showed up in ripped blue jeans and t-shirts. I suppose if Judit Polgar competed you'd be griping she wasn't wearing a jacket and tie. Anyway, none of the guys wearing 'proper attire' won the tournament, so it logically follows that ties and jackets adversely affect performance. Wink

    what an ugly medal... how about an olympic type gold medal with a raised chess piece in bronze or silver... this looks too industrial

    @bolshevikhellraiser True, but we are all human. Magnus is still young. He will be nervous thinking he might be the next world champion.

    @maturner Personally, I hope it is in India. It will truly test Magnus' chess skills in Anand's home crowd

    London is a great chess city. That was one humdinger of a tournament. I hope wch is In NYC or Paris (in the Louvre).

    Carlsen will most likely win. Carlsen has a higher winning percentage than Anand, and he's ranked number 1 in the world (Anand's #6). He's been dominating every high-level tournament he's participated in, it's kind of a nobrainer.

    Magnus "The Magnanimus" Carlsen, is now officially the World Chess challenger for Viswanatand "Vis-a-vis" Anand. It's more exciting to know. Which is which? I go for Carlsen to be the new champ.

    @ Twobit - many thanks. I owe a debt of gratitude to Ray Morris-Hill for the fantastic photos that he took during the event, which I used in my reports.

    Also, I agree about the medal. "Escherian" is an apt description! Cool

    The medal is nice, different and "Escherian". It was a great tournament without any off the board dramas, but plenty of excitement OTB. This coverage was excellent (unlike the official website that was quite glitchy) and was my favorite reading of the day. Thanks a lot to SonofPearl!

    @ NimzoRoy - No rules yet AFAIK, but I think it's meant to be over 12 games, and the latest word on dates is: 6-26 November 2013.
